The Grants

Summer Experiential Learning (SELs) Grants for Students

Saint Marys College is offering students the opportunity to apply for small grants to support summer internships that take place in any city within Indiana. The overall goal of this program is to involve Saint Mary's students in the economic life of the State and prepare them to take advantage of the economic opportunities that Indiana provides.

Preference will be given to projects that involve a significant partnership between students, employers, and faculty.

Please explore the information below to learn more about grant eligibility, resources, and number of awards available, and information about the selection process, application guidelines and requirements.

Eligibility

All rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors in any major are eligible to apply for these grants. Students with internships at companies that normally pay their summer interns may not be eligible for support from this program. Preference in the application process will be given to:

1. Projects that will take place outside of the South Bend area

2. Collaborative projects that involve a faculty member who is applying for a Summer Experiential Learning Grant for Faculty

Resources Available

These grants will provide:

1. A taxable summer stipend of up to $3,000

2. Some limited financial assistance for summer housing arrangements

IMPORTANT NOTE:

The stipend and any financial assistance that a student receives for summer housing through this program are considered as taxable income. This income will have an impact on their tax status and may also change the size of their financial aid award for the upcoming academic year. If a student receives a grant, the Office of Financial Aid will work with them to make sure that they are aware of how their grant will
impact their tax and financial aid status.

Number of Awards Available

A total of ten (10) grants are available for Summer 2008.

Application/Selection Process

Please deliver completed applications to the office of the director (032 College Student Center). Grant applications are accepted on a rolling basis until all grants are awarded. Students that have been awarded grants will be notified but please check with the Office of the Director, 032 College Student Center, email at sjeffirs@saintmarys.edu or call x4775 with questions. The deadline for Summer 2008 grants is Friday, March 21, 2008.

3. A project description (see below for specific limitations and criteria)

4. A recommendation from a faculty member (this recommendation must describe the context in which the faculty member has worked with you and should be limited to one page)

 Project Descriptions

Project Descriptions are limited to two (2) single-spaced pages with one-inch margins and a font size of no less than 12.

Project descriptions should:

For students receiving a grant, they and the person who will be supervising their internship will be required to sign an internship contract that outlines the work they will perform, when and where they will perform this work, and how they will be evaluated.
