"Christ: Old and New Views"
Talk about Christ is basic to all forms of Christian life; and hence,
christology (or reflection on Christ) is the centerpiece of Christian
theology. The purpose of this course is to examine recent developments
in contemporary christology, focusing especially on the ways in which
classical concerns and claims are interpreted and applied in the modern
setting. What is new in what people are saying about the Christ? How is
the new related to the old? Readings will be taken from the various
currents of contemporary christology, including the works of leading
European and American theologians, as well as "alternative" christologies which fall outside the
mainstream of tradition christology (whether written by women, developed
in third world countries, or conceived in non-Christian cultures). We
will also examine the more experimental and controversial christologies
of novelists and poets. This course is appropriate for all interested
students.
