"Theological Ethics"

How does Christianity affect thoughts and theories about what we should do and who we should be? Does the Gospel story encourage its listeners to do the greatest good for the greatest number? Or does it form a life framed by certain moral absolutes that can never be violated no matter how good the consequences may be? Why and how should Christians care about the virtues? Which virtues? What do stories have to do with how we live our lives and claim our identities? Should Christians support the values of their nation-states? Or should Christians stand apart from wider culture either to challenge it or to prevent being corrupted by it? We will study significant ethicists in order to pose possible answers to these questions. My hope is that the student will leave the course with a deeper understanding of how theology does and ought to inform the way Christians live.
