- When
naming your web page use numbers and letters.
- In
naming your pages do not use symbols, underscores,or spaces
- The
file extensions should be .htm or .html
- Your
home page should be named index.html
- All
of your pages should be kept in your www directory on your Saint
Mary's disk space along with all corresponding pictures and
or graphics.
- Make
sure all pictures on your web page are gif's or jpeg's
- The
file extension should be .gif or .jpg.
- GIFs
allow for animation and transparent backgrounds
- JPEGs
are better for detailed photos
- Use
text wisely
- Check
spelling and grammar on your pages
- Use
correct English
- Don't
use blinking text or marquees
- Font
size should be readable
- Your
title font should be the biggest font on the page.
- Recommended
fonts are Verdana, Arial, Courier New, Trebuchet MS, Tahoma,
Moderne
- Fonts
need to be readable
- Don't
use too many different fonts on one page
- Make
sure font colors match
- Avoid
underlining text that is not links as the users viewing the
page will have the tendency to assume that underlined text are
links
- When
creating links make sure the viewer will see a description or
title of the page the link refers to instead of just the address.
- Make
sure the text color coordinates with the background
- Make
sure the text colors are pleasing on the eyes
- Don't
have too many different colors on one page
- Try
to keep the background simple, not too busy
- Bright
backgrounds are blinding
- Don't
use animated background
- Be
original
- Try
to have a sense or layout organization about your pages and
subpages
- Have
fun making your page
- If
you are going to use a picture from someone else's site make sure
upload it into your own files.
- Just
linking to the picture on the other site makes for slow loading
and can make the person who's picture you are using mad.
- If
you are using someone else's pictures give them credit for their
work and ask for their permission to put it on your site on
less it is otherwise noted somewhere on the site
- Make
sure your picture files are compressed as much as possible
- Try
not to put too many pictures on a page. That
can slow the loading of the page down a lot.
- Try
to use original graphics
- Try
not to use animated GIF's unless they have another purpose on
the page besides making it look neat.
- Sometimes
they don't look appropriate
- They
take a long time to download
- Don't
overdue the graphics
- Use
graphics to add excitement to the page but let the content speak
for itself.
- Try
to make sure your pages look good in both Internet Explorer and
Netscape
