Troubleshooting

Q. I double-click the file I want to edit, but it doesn't open the page. --OR-- I double-click the file I want to edit, and it opens the page with a program other than Netscape.

A. Open Dreamweaver first. Then choose "Open Page" and select the appropriate file from the WWW folder or disk.

Q. When I open my page at http://www.saintmarys.edu/~jdoe9876/   I get a list of files instead of my first page. How can I make it show my first page automatically?

A. Your first page is not named "index.html", so you'll need to rename your homepage "index.html"

Q. Why don't my links work?

A. You have probably saved your documents with bad file names. Check to be sure none of your file names have spaces or the following symbols: / \ , ' " ! @ % & In addition, each file needs to end with .htm or .html . If you don't see this suffix on your pages, check to see if they have a Web page icon. If not, you will need to re-save the page with the .html on the end.

If your file names are OK, then the problem might be with the link itself. Try re-making the link, and be sure to click the "choose file" button rather than typing in the name of the page. This will ensure that you have the capitalization of the file name and the path name correct.

Q. Why don't my pictures show up when I upload my page?

A. There are many reasons why images may appear on your disk and "disappear" when you upload them to the Web. Here are a few possibilities and some solutions.

  • Did you remember to upload your images as well as your pages to your WWW folder?
    • Survival tip: Every time you add a new image to your disk, you also need to copy the image to your WWW folder. Once the picture is uploaded to your account, you don't need to re-upload it.
  • The images on uploaded Web pages are case sensitive. This means an image might not appear when you upload EVEN THOUGH it appears to work in Netscape.
    • To prevent this, follow the instructions on how to insert an image EXACTLY.
    • Are your images in a folder? Sometimes Netscape copies images out of the folder you put them in. Annoying, but true.
    • Workaround: If you open a page in Netscape and make any changes on it, double-click each image. Then be sure "Leave Images at Original Location" is checked and re-insert the picture by clicking "Choose File." Select the name of your image and click "OK."
  • Do any of your file names have spaces in them? The computer doesn't understand spaces in the names of pages, images, or folders. When you upload, the file name will be changed from my file.html to my%20file.html .
    • Fix 1 (preferred): Open your WWW folder. Click on the bad file names and rename them to take the spaces out. Then re-insert the images on any page in which they appear.
    • Fix 2: If you have an images folder with a space in the name, we may be able to find an easier way to fix your images that doesn't involve re-inserting all of your images.
