Alumnae and Special Borrowers

Saint Mary's College Alumnae and members of the South Bend community may apply in person for borrowing privileges at the Cushwa-Leighton Library during regular business hours ( M - F 8:00 - 4:00 p.m.). Special library cards will be issued which will be valid for one year at the Cushwa-Leighton Library and must be renewed annually.

Loan Periods:
Books .........28 days. Materials may be renewed in person for another loan period
Reserve Books.........Must be enrolled in the class, 2 hour loan
All other materials must be used in the Library only.

The online catalog is available for searching for materials. Please inquire at the circulation desk 284-5278 if the material you require is not on the shelf. Interlibrary loan services are provided to alumnae with a borrowers card. Interlibrary loan services are not provided to to other special borrowers.

Course reserve materials can be searched in the course reserve catalog by instructor name, course name/number and title. Printed lists of course reserve materials are also available in notebooks at the circulation desk. Alumnae and special borrowers must be enrolled in the course and may use course reserve materials for a period of two (2) hours in the library.

It is your responsibility to return library materials on time. Library materials that are not returned or renewed by the due date are subject to overdue notices and service charges. Overdue reminders will be sent primarily via e-mail. Failure to receive overdue reminders does not exempt you from the due date.

Items not returned after 30 days from the due date will be presumed lost. A lost book fee of $60.00 will be automatically assessed. This charge includes a $40.00 book replacement fee* and a $20.00 processing fee.

All fees should be paid in the College Business Office. Unpaid library charges may result in patron borrowing privileges being restricted until the matter is resolved and may result in having an unpaid account turned over to a collection agency. Materials found and returned to the Library within one year after they have been billed will have the replacement fee refunded.

Questions about this policy should be directed to the Collection Management Supervisor.

Theft and mutilation of library materials are state offenses, Indiana Code 35-43-4-3.5, and, therefore, are matters for College disciplinary action. Inspection of books, briefcases, backpacks, and handbags may be requested to ensure that library materials are properly checked out.
