FINDING
AN ARTICLE
The
best resource for locating articles in a scholarly journal,
magazine
or newspaper is a periodical
index. These indexes, which may be multi-disciplined
or subject specific, can be searched in a multitude of
ways
generating
a list
of citations to
articles on a specific subject. A citation contains the
author, title of the article, issue and pages of the journal
in which
the article appears. Many of the periodical indexes contain
the full-text of the articles in the citation list. If
the article you need is not available full-text, search
the online
catalog to see if Saint Mary's has a subscription
to the journal containing your article; some subscriptions
are electronic. If the journal needed
is not available at Saint Mary's or Notre Dame, request
the article from interlibrary
loan.
The
Cushwa-Leighton Library has approximately 800 current subscriptions
to journals. The latest issue of each periodical title
will be found in alphabetical
order in the periodicals room with other current issues
under the slanted shelf. Back issues
of a title will be found on the lower level in alphabetical
order on the shelves. Newspaper titles are on separate
shelves in the periodicals room with back issues on the
lower level. The library subscribes to a wide variety
of e-journals.
The full-text of the articles in the e-journals can be
found online. If you cannot find the periodical, e-journal
or newspaper you are looking
for, ASK
at
the
reference
desk.
