Preparation
of Teachers - Secondary
A
student following the teaching concentration for a math major must
take professional education courses (29 hours) which include student
teaching. The college holds NCATE accreditation.
Preparation
of Teachers - Elementary
Every
elementary education major must take three mathematics courses (9
hours), including Math 118 and Math 302, in order to satisfy requirement
of the Department of Education and the State of Indiana. An elementary
education student may obtain a minor in mathematics, which will be
listed on her transcript. In addition to Math 118 and Math 302, one
course in calculus, and two courses selected from statistics, number
theory, linear algebra, and geometry are required. This strong minor
prepares a student to serve as a mathematics specialist in elementary
schools. For details on these programs, students consult the Education
Department or Professor Don Balka in the Math Department. A student
interested in teaching at the junior high/middle school level may
satisfy requirements (24 hours) for an endorsement which will also
appear on the graduate's teaching license.
Computer
Education Endorsement
The State
of Indiana has approved a four course computer education endorsement
for secondary and elementary education students. The endorsement will
be listed on the qualified graduate's teaching license.
