Connecting to Jade using secure
FTP clients
For security concerns, the Information Technology department
is requiring that all FTP connections to the server Jade must be secure. In this document are instructions on how to
use FTP to connect to your network space through Jade.
For Windows Users
Windows users need to install a secure FTP client to
transfer files between their computers and their network spaces. Here now are instructions on installing and

Setting up and using WinSCP
The following section includes instructions on how to
connect to your network drive using WinSCP. Note that this is the only way to access your
network files from off campus. Unlike a mapped network drive from an on campus
computer where you can just save your files to that location, you will need to
use WinSCP to copy files onto your local hard drive,
then modify the file on your computer, and then transfer the file back to the
network when you are finished using it.
- When
you launch WinSCP for the first time, a screen
will appear asking you to set up your connection. Type in jade.saintmarys.edu under Host Name and type in your Saint Mary’s username under User name. Then click on the Save button to save your settings.
|

|
|

|
- A
screen like the one to the left will then appear. Click on OK to save the session with the default
name, or you can choose to change the name of the session and then click
OK.
|
- Then a
screen like this one will appear.
Type in your Saint Mary’s password and click on OK to continue.

- WinSCP will then launch. The first time you run the program an
error message like the one to the right will appear. Click on Yes to continue.
|

|
- A
screen like the one below will then appear. This screen is the actual program. Notice that the pane on the left is the
My Documents folder on the hard drive on my computer, while the pane on
the right is my network space (H: drive) on diamond. From this window you can copy and paste
files from one location to the other, and browse the files on your
computer and on your network space.

- To
finish using WinSCP, go to File and select Exit
from the menu. A screen like the
one below will then appear. Click
on OK to finish closing the
program.

- Every
time you use WinSCP the screen that you first
see will be like the one shown to the right. Select the name of the session that
you created above, and click on the Login
button to connect to Jade. Then a
screen like in step 3 above will appear to ask for your password, and you
can continue using the program.
