Map / Identity / Family and Friends / Genealogy / Home

At first, after I had read over the criteria, I thought I probably know the most about personal identity. I mean I've had to live with myself for 18 years. How are hard could mapping some of that out be? As it turns out there's quite a bit to a person's identity. I thought about what defines an identity and what parts of that are most relevant and what can be excluded or "contrasted through economy." I thought the most obvious facets to an identity are family, friends, self perception, genealogy etc. etc. As that list kept growing, I realized if I wanted to finish this project I would have to edit it down a bit to just genealogy, family and friends.

Family and friends seems to me to be one of the biggest contributions to a person's identity. People learn who they'll be and how they'll act based on the interactions with people around them. And 99% of the time those people fall into this category. But this topic also presented a problem to me. Who do I choose to incorporate and who do I leave out? I would definitely talk about my immediate family; my mom, my dad, brothers and sisters. Since there are 7 people right there, I could have probably saved room by lumping them into one category. But would I have to incorporate extended family? How in-depth did I want to get with this? I would probably need to talk about my fiancé, Eli, here too. I could easily make a map on the topic of that relationship alone. I haven't even mentioned friends yet. Where and how do I put a border around that? Do I base it on "best friends," "good friends," "acquaintances," etc. etc. Since all of them have a part in making someone's identity. So I basically presented my indecisive self with too many decisions.

Thinking about how families influence someone's identity got me to thinking about genealogy. We are who we are because of our past. Those people made the people that raised the people that raised you. Did I confuse you? Well I did myself. So I considered putting in a family tree, but I couldn't think of anything too creative to do with it. I mean a family tree is a family tree. I would have to incorporate this idea some how with the previous ideas.
