How Do I Get Started?

Here are some recommended steps if you are considering moving toward a service-learning pedagogy.

1.) Think carefully about the learning outcomes for the specific class. Consider what you think a service component would add to those outcomes. This helps to clarify what it is you're hoping to accomplish. It will also help with assessment.

2.) Visit some web sites to explore what other people in your field have done with service-learning.Some of the best ones can be found by clicking on the "effective practice"' tab on the main service-learning page. (Take me back there now.)

3.) Contact the Director of the Office for Civic and Social Engagement. The Director will provide you with the following resources:

a.) You will be sent a copy of the text Where's the Service in Service-Learning? (an excellent introductory and research-based text) along with the appropriate title for your discipline from the American Association for Higher Education's Series on Service-Learning in the Disciplines.

b.) You will be assisted in making contact with local agencies or professionals for the service aspect of your course.

c.) You will receive copies of all the necessary legal paperwork for service-learning in the classroom.

d.) You can ask questions and receive a one-on-one consultation about your course design and plans.
