This course will explore two political concerns of Americans: freedom and democracy. We certainly believe that freedom and democracy make the United States great, but what do we mean by those terms? We will develop some ways of thinking about freedom and democracy, and then apply those terms to two important cases. We will look at the Republican Party's "Contract with America" and the women's movement to understand the implications of different ways of thinking about freedom and democracy.
