438 ACTIVITY 4: Review of Base Concepts

WHY:

This activity allows the team to learn those base concepts which one or more of the team members do not know sufficiently well to understand later course material. These concepts will be used repeatedly as the course progresses and failure to be on top of them will inhibit learning. These concepts are also used in other courses and should be part of the skill and knowledge set of every math major.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Discover the answers to the sample quiz on base concepts.
  2. Ensure that all group members understand these base concepts.
  3. Discover the criteria for the team leader role.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA:

  1. Ability of each team member to explain the answers to the quiz questions.
  2. Effectiveness of the team leader in helping the group to a successful conclusion of the activity.

    RESOURCES:

    1. Chapter 0 and Sections 4.2, 4.3
    2. Sample quiz.
    3. 30 minutes

    PLAN:

    1. Choose roles if you have not already done so.
    2. Do the sample quiz on base concepts using all your resources.
    3. Make sure that each member of the group can explain each question when I call on her at random at the conclusion of the activity.
    4. Hand in one copy of the sample quiz at the end of class.
    5. Fill in the Critical Thinking Questions.
