Microsoft Campus Agreement for Saint Mary's Students!

Saint Mary's College has had a Microsoft Campus Agreement since the fall of 2007. This agreement allows students to purchase a single copy of:

    • Microsoft Office 2010 for Windows
    • Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac
    • Microsoft Office 2007 for Windows
    • Windows 7 Ultimate Edition Upgrade
    • Windows Vista Ultimate Edition Upgrade

for only $10 each! Students must show their Saint Mary's ID card and sign a license agreement to purchase the software, and the software will be charged to their student accounts.

Microsoft has not yet announced when Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac will be available to students through their Microsoft Campus Agreement programs. We hope to have the new version of the software available by January 2011 at the latest.

Download our Licensing information for the new Saint Mary's College Microsoft Campus Agreement for students for all students and parents.

Windows and ResNet

ResNet supports the folowing versions of Microsoft WIndows:

    • Windows XP Professional Edition
    • Windows Vista Business Edition
    • Windows Vista Ultimate Edition
    • Windows 7 Professional Edition
    • Windows 7 Ultimate Edition

ResNet will not support computers running Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Media Center Edition, Windows Vista Home Basic Edition, Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, Windows 7 Starter Edition, Windows 7 Home Basic Edition, or Windows 7 Home Premium Edition. Students with these operating systems on their computers will be told to purchase an operating system upgrade (available through our Microsoft Campus Agreement).

If you chose to buy a new computer running Windows, ResNet strongly recommends purchasing a computer that already has a supported operating system installed. Computers that did not have a supported Windows operating system pre-installed that are brought to the ResNet Office average more than six hours to complete the upgrade process to be compatible with the network, and students are required to be present in the ResNet Office while their computers are being upgraded. The length of time varies by computer manufacturer, model, and availability of hardware drivers.

Not all computers that are sold with Windows Vista Home Basic Edition, Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, Windows 7 Starter Edition, or Windows 7 Home Premium Edition installed can be upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate Edition or Windows 7 Edition.

ResNet: Frequently Asked Questions

The ResNet Office and the ResNet Helpline are not staffed during the summer. If you have questions about Zimbra webmail, how to access Prism if it gives you an error, how to clean pop-ups and viruses from your computer, how to update your virus protection software or Windows security patches, or have other questions about using your computer, this is the place to look for the answers! These questions address concerns students have while they are both on and off campus.

BelleAire Connection Instructions

BelleAire, the wireless network at Saint Mary's College, is available in several locations on campus, including the Noble Family Dining Hall, the Student Center, Madeleva Hall, Cushwa-Leighton Library, the Science building, Reignbeaux Lounge in Le Mans Hall, McCandless Hall, Regina Hall, and the lounge areas of Opus Hall. For a more complete list, please visit http://www.saintmarys.edu/it/wireless.html.

Click on the BelleAire Connection Information link in the left column or click here for instructions on how to connect your computer to the new wireless network.

BelleAire supports 802.11b and 802.11g wireless cards. (802.11n wireless cards will also work on BelleAire.) Support for connecting to BelleAire is available for computers running Mac OS X, Windows XP, and Windows Vista. Saint Mary's does not support older operating systems on BelleAire.

If you need assistance with connecting to BelleAire, please bring your computer to the ResNet Office and an RCC would be happy to assist you.

Webcams @ Saint Mary's College

Saint Mary's College allows webcams to be used within ResNet.

ResNet is unable to provide technical support to students who need assistance with their webcams. We recommend that students refer to the instructions provided with their webcams and video chatting software for assistance, and all webcam usage should be over the wired (rather than wireless) network. Google Chat and Skype work successfully from ResNet.

Students may have problems with video chat during peak times of Internet usage on campus because of bandwidth limitations.

ResNet advises that students using webcams in their residence hall rooms tell their roommates and visitors when the webcam is in use to prevent any potentally embarassing situations.

Is Your Computer Patched?

A large number of computers running Windows connecting to ResNet this semester do not have the latest security patches from Microsoft. Computers without current patches will be blocked from accessing the campus network.

To update your Windows computer quickly and easily, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ using Internet Explorer.

At that site, click on the link to scan for updates. Your computer will be scanned by Microsoft to see what updates need to be installed on your computer. When it finds updates to install, click on the link to review and install updates. Click the Install Now button to download the updates and install them on your computer. Please be patient while your computer downloads and installs the patches. Depending on your system and the number of patches needing to be installed, the updates may take a while.

If your computer has already been blocked from the network for not having patches installed, you may follow the instructions on the web page telling you your computer has been blocked. If you need additional assitance, you will need to fill out a ResNet Problem Report Form at http://fixit.saintmarys.edu.

Saint Mary's College and RIAA/Copyright Violations

Saint Mary's College receives multiple cease-and-desist letters annually from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) regarding students who are downloading/sharing/serving music files (MP3s) on our campus.

If Information Technology is notified by the Recording Industry Association of America that you are offering copyrighted sound recordings for download, your network connection at Saint Mary's College will be disabled to ensure immediate compliance with the RIAA's request. You will be contacted by Student Affairs regarding the situation. Your network connection will only be re-enabled after authorization is given by Student Affairs to the Coordinator of Student Computing.

If subpoenaed, the College is required to required to provide your personal information to the RIAA for the RIAA to take possible legal action against you. Penalties for violating copyright law could range as high as $250,000 and five years in prison and/or up to $150,000 per copyrighted work distributed without permission.

The Recording Industry Association of America believes it is in everyone's interest for music consumers to be better educated about the subject of copyright law and music. The Association encourages you to visit the MUSIC Coalition's new website at www.musicunited.org. The site contains valuable information about what's legal and what's not when it comes to copying music.

Computer Viruses!

Saint Mary's College provides all faculty, staff, and students with free virus-protection software for installation on personally-owned computers. If a computer within ResNet is spreading viruses on the network, it will be disconnected from the network (including Internet, e-mail, network drives) until the viruses have been removed. For more information on computer viruses and instructions on how to install virus-protection software on your computer, visit http://www.saintmarys.edu/~virus.

Instructions for how to remove many computer viruses from your personal computer can be found on the ResNet FAQ site.

ResNet and Computer Assistance

Having a problem with your personal computer? Fill out a ResNet Problem Report Form at http://fixit.saintmarys.edu from any computer with a network connection and a Residential Computer Consultant will contact you to assist you. You are also welcome to bring your notebook computer to the ResNet Office when it is open for immediate assistance.

Please be patient as we try to assist all Saint Mary's students with their personal computer questions as quickly as possible. Thank you.
