General Information
These instructions assume the following:
- Your computer is running Windows XP Professional.
Your computer has all of the current Windows security patches installed.
Your computer has a wireless networking card installed (3Com or Netgear cards are recommended).
The card should be 802.11b or 802.11g compatable (or both). 802.11a cards will not work on
the BellAire network.
You have up-to-date virus protection software (VirusScan) installed on your computer.
You have administrator access to your computer.*
Your computer name is your Saint Mary's user name.*
Your computer is configured to use DHCP.*

Click on the Windows Connection Information link in the left column for
the documentation. College-owned computers with a software image installed
on it by Information Technology have the starred steps abve already addressed.
- From the Start menu, select Control Panel.
- In the left column, under Control Panel, click Switch to Classic View.
(If it says Switch to category View, you are already in Classic view.)
- Double-click on the Network Connections icon.
- You should see an icon labelled Wireless Network Connection. Double-click on the icon.
- Under Available wireless networks: you should see BelleAire listed.
Click on BelleAire to highlight it.
If you do not see BelleAire listed, it is possible that your computer is
not in the range of one of Saint Mary's wireless access points.
- Check the box next to "Allow me to connect to the selected wireless network, even though it
is not secure."
- Click on the Connect button.
- A balloon window should appear in the lower left corner of your screen telling you that you are connected
to BelleAire. It will also tell you the wireless signal strength your computer is receiving.
There are also four green bars in the system tray that indicate the strength of signal your computer
is receiving. (Wireless signal strength for computer networks is very similar to signal strength for
cellular phones. The stronger the signal, the better the access.)
- Open a web broswer (Internet Explorer, Netscape).
- You may see a security alert error that there is a problem with the site's security certificate.
If you see this error, click Yes to continue.
Note: This message is normal and you may see it every time you open a web browser to
connect to BelleAire.
- The Saint Mary's College Wireless Network Access Page will appear.
- Type in your Saint Mary's username and password in the appropriate fields.
- Click Continue.
- You will see a message that you have been successfully logged on the network.
You may now check your e-mail and the surf the web as normal.
To reconnect to the BelleAire network:
Depending on your computer, you can reconnect to the BelleAire network the following ways
(use the option that works best for you and your computer):
Option A:
- You may see a balloon window appear in the lower left corner of your screen
telling you that you are connected to BelleAire when your computer is in the range of a
BelleAire wireless access point. It will also tell you the wireless signal
strength your computer is receiving. There are also four green bars in the system tray that
indicate the strength of signal your computer is receiving.
- Open a web browser and type in your username and password where prompted.
- You will see a message that you have been successfully logged on the network.
You may now check your e-mail and the surf the web as normal.
Option B:
- You may see a balloon window appear in the lower left corner of your screen
telling you that "one or more wireless networks are available" and to click on the icon in
the system tray that looks like two computers.
- The computer may automatically decide to connect to the BelleAire network on its own
a few seconds after displaying the balloon window. It will then show a balloon window
telling you that you are connected to BelleAire. It will also tell you the wireless signal
strength your computer is receiving.
- If it does not automatically connect to the BelleAire network, click on the icon in
the system tray that looks like two computers that the balloon windows was pointing to.
- Under Available wireless networks: you should see BelleAire listed.
Click on BelleAire to highlight it.
If you do not see BelleAire listed, it is possible that your computer is
not in the range of one of Saint Mary's wireless access points.
- Check the box next to "Allow me to connect to the selected wireless network, even though it
is not secure."
- Click on the Connect button.

to BelleAire. It will also tell you the wireless signal strength your computer is receiving.

Option C:

It should also say Enabled. If it does not say Enabled, please follow the
steps in the section above.
- You will see a balloon window appear in the lower left corner of your screen
telling you that you are connected to BelleAire when your computer is in the range of a
BelleAire wireless access point. It will also tell you the wireless signal
strength your computer is receiving. There are also four green bars in the system tray that
indicate the strength of signal your computer is receiving.
- Open a web browser and type in your username and password where prompted.
- You will see a message that you have been successfully logged on the network.
You may now check your e-mail and the surf the web as normal.
