Checking Your Computer's Specifications for ResNet

Checking the Specifications for Mac OS 8.x or 9.x
Make sure that your computer meets the minimum requirements for ResNet access
and the minimum requirements for Mac OS 8.x or 9.x. For your Macintosh computer to work
on ResNet while running Mac OS 8.x or 9.x, your computer will need at least a
G3 processor (includes iMacs and iBooks) with 64MB of physical RAM.
- Click on the desktop.
- Under the Apple menu, choose About this Macintosh or About this Computer.
- Note the System Software version, the built-in memory (RAM), and also the model
name if available. (If the model name is not listed in the window, it is probably
listed on the front of the computer.)
- To see how much space is available on your hard drive, click once on your hard drive icon
to highlight it. Go under the File menu and choose Get Info (or press Command-I).
In the window that opens, note the figures listed next to the items "Available" and "Capacity."
Checking the Specifications for Mac OS X
Make sure that your computer meets the minimum requirements for ResNet access
and the minimum requirements for Mac OS X. For your Macintosh computer to work
on ResNet while running Mac OS X, you will need an iMac, iBook,
Power Mac G3, Power Mac G4, Power Mac G4 Cube, PowerBook G3, or PowerBook G4
computer with at least 128MB of physical RAM. Mac OS X does not support the
original PowerBook G3 or processor upgrade cards.
- To check the total physical RAM (memory) and the
operating system version for your Macintosh, go to the Apple menu at the
top left of the computer screen. The first item under the Apple menu should be
About This Mac.
- The number next to Memory: should be at least 128 MB. This picture shows that
the computer has 256MB RAM. The number next to Version: is the operating system
version. Ideally, your Mac should be running at least version 10.1. If not, you can run
Software Update (found in the System Preferences) to update your operating system.
Checking the Specifications for Windows
Make sure that your computer meets the minimum requirements for ResNet access
and the minimum requirements for Windows. For your Windows computer to work
on ResNet while running Windows 98 or Windows Me, your computer will need at least a Pentium III
processor with 64MB of physical RAM. For your Windows computer to work
on ResNet while running Windows XP, you will need a at least a Pentium III processor
with 128MB of physical RAM.
- Right-click on your My Computer icon and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, you will find the version of Windows you are running,
as well as the processor type, speed, and amount of RAM.
- To see how much space is available on your hard drive, double-click on the
My Computer icon, right-click your C: drive, and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, you will see the amount of free space available and the
total capacity of the hard drive.
