How do I install and use Lavasoft's Ad-Aware 2007 software on my computer?
Ad-Aware Free 2007 runs on computers Windows XP Professional and Home Editions as well as all editions of Windows Vista.
These instructions assume that your computer has a working Internet connection.
Please move ahead to Section B.
Double-click on the aaw2007.exe icon (which should be on your computer's desktop unless you saved it in another location).
Ad-Aware's setup program will launch on your computer. Click Next.
Read the license agreement and click the button next to I accept the license agreement.
Click Next.
Type your full name where prompted. You can leave the Organization field blank.
Click the button next to Anyone who uses this computer.
Make sure that Standard installation is selected and click Next.
By default, the software will be installed on your hard drive in the Program Files folder. Click Next.
Click Next to begin the installation of Ad-Aware.
If you have a previous version on Ad-Aware installed, you should choose to have it automatically uninstalled. Make sure the Automatic option is selected and click Next. Click Finish to have the previous version of Ad-Aware removed from your computer.
When the software has been successfully installed, click Finish.
When prompted to enter your license information, leave the Serial Number and Unlock Key fields blank and click Cancel.
In the Update Status section, click the Update button to obtain the latest Ad-Aware definition files.
When prompted, click Yes to update the Definitions File.
If prompted, you should also click Yes to obtain any software updates by going to the download location. Click OK to any updates that are available. In the Update Manager window that will eventually appear (either immediately, or after the Update Manager itself is updated), you can see the options that are available for download. Click Download to download any available updates. Click OK to close the Update Manager when the updates are complete.
In the System Scan section, click the Scan Now button to scan your computer for spyware.
For your first scan with Ad-Aware 2007, please select the Full Scan and then click on the Scan button.
In the future, if you are doing a routine scan (you scan your computer on a weekly basis with Ad-Aware), a Smart Scan is all you will need to do. Select the Smart Scan and then click on the Scan button.
If you do not perform routine Ad-Aware scans and only scan your computer when you think there may be spyware on your computer, please select the Full Scan and then click on the Scan button for those scans.
If you are unsure which scan to run on your computer, select the Full Scan - it may take a few more minutes, but it is more thorough and more likely to catch any spyware culprits.
Ad-Aware will scan your computer for adware/spyware.
When the scan is complete, Ad-Aware will display what it found. Critical objects will be listed under the first tab and Privacy objects will be listed under the second tab.
Check both tabs for results. The scanning results will show you what files should be removed from your computer. Not all of the items may have a checkmark next to them. Check the box for each item listed under each tab so that it will be removed.
Click Remove under the Critical objects tab to delete the items found in that category.
Click Remove under the Privacy objects tab to delete the items found in that category.
Click Finish when you are done using Ad-Aware.
Close the window to quit Ad-Aware.
Restart your computer in Safe mode.
Run the Ad-Aware software again to make sure any files that could not be detected and/or removed before can now be deleted. There are several pop-ups that are being seen at Saint Mary's that can only be detected and/or removed by Ad-Aware in Safe mode. Double-click on the Ad-Aware 2007 icon on your desktop to launch the program.

You may now drag the ssw2007.exe file from your computer's desktop to the Recycle Bin. You should not need that file again.
You may decide to remove Ad-Aware, but you may find it helpful to periodically run the software on your computer to remove future adware and spyware on your computer, and ResNet recommends doing so. Instructions for running Ad-Aware on your computer for regular adware/spyware cleaning is at the bottom of this page.
Ad-Aware 2007 installs a shortcut to Lavasoft's Ad-Watch program on the desktop. You may delete that shortcut if you wish.
If you need additional assistance beyond the instructions we provide on the ResNet web site (http://www.saintmarys.edu/~resnet), please fill out a ResNet Problem Report Form at http://fixit.saintmarys.edu and an RCC will assist you.
