I think my computer has one of the AOL Instant Messenger viruses. Is there a way I can clean the virus off on my own?
ResNet recommends using the AIMFix tool, a free utility from http://www.jayloden.com. This free tool is frequently updated, and has been used successfully by ResNet to clean computers infected with various viruses that spread via AOL Instant Messgenger.
Please note that you are welcome to follow these steps to clean your infected computer while you are connected to ResNet, or if you are off campus.
Double-click on the AIMFix icon (which should be on your computer's desktop unless you saved it in another location).
The tool will run and search for the viruses that infect and spread via AOL Instant Messenger and remove them for your computer.
When the tool is finished, it will report its results. Press Enter or Return to quit AIMFix.
Note: If, when running the tool, you see a message that the tool was not able to remove one or more files or terminate a process, run the tool in Safe mode. To run it in Safe mode, shut down the computer, turn off the power, and wait 30 seconds. Restart the computer in Safe mode (press F8 after restarting before Windows screen appears) and then run the tool again.
Restart your computer.
Restart your computer.
If you are unsure how to run a scan on your computer, please visit the Virus Protection @ Saint Mary's College website at http://www.saintmarys.edu/virus/ and refer to the section Instructions for using virus-protection software.
