ResNet recommends using the AIMFix tool, a free utility from http://www.jayloden.com. This free tool is frequently updated, and has been used successfully by ResNet to clean computers infected with various viruses that spread via AOL Instant Messgenger.

    Please note that you are welcome to follow these steps to clean your infected computer while you are connected to ResNet, or if you are off campus.


    Step 1. Obtain AIMFix, the recommended free virus removal tool

    1. Obtain the latest free AIMFix (http://www.jayloden.com)
      1. Click on the following link, or type the URL into a web browser and hit Return: http://www.jayloden.com/aimfix.exe.
      2. The software download should start immediately.
      3. If/when prompted, choose to Save the file to a convenient location on your hard disk (such as your Desktop folder).
    Step 2. Remove the virus(es)

    1. Close all programs running on your computer.
    2. Disable System Restore:
      • On your Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home computer:
        1. Disable System Restore.
        2. Click Start.
        3. Right-click on My Computer, and then select Properties.
        4. Click the System Restore tab.
        5. Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" box.
        6. Click Apply. A message will appear asking if you want to turn off System Restore. Click Yes.
        7. Click OK.

      • On your Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate computer:
        1. Disable System Restore.
        2. Click Start.
        3. Right-click on Computer, and then select Properties.
        4. Click System protection in the left column.
        5. Click Continue if prompted.
        6. Note what drives are checked (if there is more than one drive listed). Uncheck any drives listed in the Automatic restore points section of the window.
        7. A window will appear asking "Are you sure you want to turn System Restore off?" Click the Turn System Restore Off button.
        8. Click Apply.
        9. Click OK.
        10. Close the System Control Panel window.

    3. Double-click on the AIMFix icon (which should be on your computer's desktop unless you saved it in another location).

    4. The tool will run and search for the viruses that infect and spread via AOL Instant Messenger and remove them for your computer.

    5. When the tool is finished, it will report its results. Press Enter or Return to quit AIMFix.

    6. Note: If, when running the tool, you see a message that the tool was not able to remove one or more files or terminate a process, run the tool in Safe mode. To run it in Safe mode, shut down the computer, turn off the power, and wait 30 seconds. Restart the computer in Safe mode (press F8 after restarting before Windows screen appears) and then run the tool again.

    7. Restart your computer.

    Step 3: Update your Saint Mary's Virus Protection Software (McAfee VirusScan) with the latest free virus definitions.

    1. Visit http://www.mcafee.com/apps/downloads/security_updates/dat.asp?region=us&segment=enterprise.
    2. If prompted, click I agree because Saint Mary's College has a PrimeSupport agreement with McAfee.
    3. Click on the SuperDATs tab near the top of the page.
    4. Click on the sdatXXXX.exe link - the XXXX represents the version number of the SuperDAT file. (The Release Date listed for the file should not be longer than two days ago.)
    5. When prompted, choose to Save the file to a convenient location on your hard disk (such as your Desktop folder). This sdat file will update your Saint Mary's-provided McAfee VirusScan software to the latest virus definitions to protect your computer from current viruses. You can close your web browser window when the sdat has finished downloading.
    6. Double-click on the sdatXXXX icon (which should be on your computer's desktop unless you saved it in another location).
    7. A windows box will open. Click on the Next button. Several processes should then take place, including closing and re-opening VirusScan. When the files have been successfully installed onto your hard drive, you may get a box asking you if you want to restart your machine. If that is the case. make sure the "Yes, I want to restart my computer now" button is selected to reboot your machine. Click on the Finish button.
    8. Restart your computer.

    Step 4: To ensure your computer has been cleaned of the virus, run VirusScan on your computer. Step 5: Enable System Restore

    • On your Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home computer:
      1. Click Start.
      2. Right-click on My Computer, and then select Properties.
      3. Click the System Restore tab.
      4. Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" box.
      5. Click Apply.
      6. Click OK.

    • On your Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate computer:
      1. Click Start.
      2. Right-click on Computer, and then select Properties.
      3. Click System protection in the left column.
      4. Click Continue if prompted.
      5. Check any drives listed in the Automatic restore points section of the window that were previously checked.
      6. Click Apply.
      7. Click OK.
      8. Close the System Control Panel window.

    Step 6: If your computer continues to have problems, you are welcome to contact the ResNet Office for assistance. The ResNet Office has additional tools to clean viruses off student computers.
