How do I install and use AVG Anti-Spyware software on my computer?
AVG Anti-Spyware (formerly known as Ewido Anti-Spyware and Ewido Anti-Malware) runs on computers with Microsoft Windows XP (Professional and Home Editions) and Microsoft Windows Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate Editions).
These instructions assume that your computer has a working Internet connection.
Please move ahead to Section B.
Double-click on the avgas-setup.exe icon (which should be on your computer's desktop unless you saved it in another location). The file may be named slightly different from avgas-setup.exe to reflect the version number of the software.
You will be asked to select a language. English will be the default. Click OK.
AVG Anti-Spyware's setup program will launch on your computer. Click Next.
Read the license agreement and click on the I Agree button.
Click Next to have the software install in your Program Files folder.
Click Install. The software will take a minute to install on your computer. And AVG Anti-Spyware folder will also be created in your Start menu.
When the software has finished installing, click Finish.
The software will automatically launch. If it does not, double-click on the AVG Anti-Spyware icon on your desktop to run the software.
Click the Update button in the top row of the window.
Click the Start Update button. (The update may start on its own.) Let the update download and install onto your computer.
When the update is complete, click the Scanner button in the top row of the window.
Click on the Complete System Scan option.
The Ewido Anti-Spyware scan will run. Depending on the speed of your computer and the number of files on it, this process can take a while. A normal scan can take a half an hour or more without the need for concern. Please be patient.
If an "infected object" is found, you may see an alert window appear describing what was found.
When the scan is complete, the list of items that are found will show what actions will be taken. In most cases, the action should be Delete. If the action listed is other than Delete, you can click on the word Delete and a pop-up menu will appear to let you select Delete as an option.
Click Apply all actions to delete the infected objects.
After the actions have been applied, you can close the window to quit AVG Anti-Spyware. (You may or may not want to save the report. Saving the report would let you see what was found, and would allow you to show an RCC or other tech support person what was found on your computer and allow them to determine if additional steps to protect your computer in the future need to be taken.)
Restart your computer in Safe mode.
Run the AVG Anti-Malware software again to make sure any files that could not be detected and/or removed before can now be deleted. There are several pop-ups that are being seen at Saint Mary's that can only be detected and/or removed by AVG Anti-Spyware in Safe mode. Double-click on the AVG Anti-Spyware icon to launch the program.
Click the Scanner button in the top row of the window.
Click the Complete System Scan option.

Please move ahead to Section C.
You may now drag the avgas-setup.exe file from your computer's desktop to the Recycle Bin. You should not need that file again.
You may decide to remove AVG Anti-Spyware, but you may find it helpful to periodically run the software on your computer to remove future adware and spyware on your computer, and ResNet recommends doing so. Instructions for running AVG Anti-Spyware on your computer for regular adware/spyware cleaning is at the bottom of this page.
If you need additional assistance beyond the instructions we provide on the ResNet web site (http://www.saintmarys.edu/~resnet), please fill out a ResNet Problem Report Form at http://fixit.saintmarys.edu and an RCC will assist you.

Click on the Complete System Scan option.
You may choose the "Fast System Scan" if you want to run a quicker scan, but it will not scan all of your computer's directories for spyware and other malware. The Fast System Scan is better for maintenance scans, and the Complete System Scan is better for when your computer is experiencing problems.
