Sociology Requirements
The
department's various courses, seminars, research experiments,
and internships are designed to meet the needs of the College
in general and departmental majors in particular. Specifically,
the department is designed to achieve the following objectives:
- to
develop an appreciation for the sociological perspective which
incorporates three central aspects:
1.)
the preeminence of social structure and their influences;
2.) the value of empirical analysis; and
3.) the link between private troubles and public issues, or the individual's
experience and larger social processes;
- to
provide the requisite background for entry into occupational
roles which require an understanding of human social behavior;
- to
provide sufficent preparation and direction for those students
who intend to continue their studies in the discipline of sociology
in graduate school;
- to
provide students with an appreciation of the applications and
the uses of the discipline of sociology;
- to
prepare students to meet the requirements necessary for certification
in teaching, for sociology is a supporting area in the Social
Studies in the high school setting.
To
achieve these objectives the department offers a major in
the discipline of sociology. A minor
in sociology is also available.

IN SOCIOLOGY (36 hours)

- TWO
designated diversity courses (SOC 350, 355, SOC 360, SOC 365,
SOC 366, or other
approved SOC diversity themed course)
- Four,
three-credit electives in sociology
- Dual majors who their senior comprehensive another department are required
to take an additional elective in SOC
MINOR
IN SOCIOLOGY (15 hours)

GENERAL
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
The following courses fulfill the social science General Education
requirements: SOC 153, 203, and 257.
TEACHER
PREPARATION
The Sociology Department in conjunction with the Education Department
offers courses leading to state licensing for History/Social Studies.
ADVANCED
WRITING PROFICENCY
To fulfill the College's advanced writing proficency requirement,
each student completing the senior seminar course SOC 495) submits
her written senior comprehensive project for evaluation.
SENIOR
COMPREHENSIVE
The Senior Seminar (SOC 495) fulfills the senior comprehensive
requirements in the department.
