Hope Hands Saint Mary's First Loss
HOLLAND, MI – The Saint Mary’s soccer team dropped their first match of the season with a 3-1 loss to Hope College on Saturday afternoon.
The loss puts the Belles record at 3-1 while Hope evens its mark to 2-2.
Lauren Hinton scored the first goal of the contest in the 37 th minutes off a pass from Julia Gragtmans to give Saint Mary’s a 1-0 advantage. The Flying Dutch quickly responded when Julia Fischer found the back of the net in the 38th minutes to knot the match at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Sonya Masghati scored what proved to be the game winner with a shot past Belles goalie Amy Mahoney at the 49 minute mark. Hope added an insurance goal in the 86 th minute when Ellie Tresslar found the back of the net.
Kelly Schaefer made seven saves in goal for Hope to earn the victory. Mahoney tallied 10 saves in her third start of the season.
Hope held a 21-10 edge in overall shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
