Saint Mary’s Drops Adrian in Five Games
NOTRE DAME, IN – The Saint Mary’s volleyball team ended a seven match losing streak to Adrian with a thrilling 3-2 (30-24, 28-30, 32-34, 30-22, 15-8) victory over the Bulldogs on Tuesday evening.
The win lifts the Belles record to 7-10 overall and 4-5 in MIAA play while Adrian falls to 11-7 and 8-2 respectively.
After splitting the first two games, the two squads played a tight third game. After Saint Mary’s raced out to a 7-2 edge to the start the game, the Bulldogs quickly responded to tie the game at 8-8 and neither team held a lead larger than four points the rest of the game. Saint Mary’s had a pair of game points at 29-28 and 30-29 but couldn’t convert. Adrian finally pulled out the third game victory on their third game point on a Lorna Slupczynski attack error.
The start of the fourth game went back-and-forth until, with the game tied at 16-16, the Belles scored the next eight points to take control of the game and force the decisive game. Saint Mary’s scored 11 of the first 14 points in the final game and never looked back in clinching the match.
Slupczynski had a career high and match best 27 kills to go along with her match high19 digs in the win. Andrea Sagen tallied a 13-kill, 16-dig effort while Kaela Hellmann notched a 13-kill, 13-dig performance. Amanda David dished out a season best 65 assists while digging up 14 balls.
Cathy Kurczak and Jacee Watson tossed in 15 and 10 kills respectively in the winning effort.
