Alma Hands Saint Mary’s 3-2 Setback
October 24, 2007, ALMA, MI – In the final regular season game for both teams, Alma posted a 3-2 win over Saint Mary’s in MIAA soccer action Wednesday afternoon.
The win lifts Alma to 8-7-2 overall and 3-4-1 in league play while Saint Mary’s falls to 7-4-5 and 3-3-2 respectively.
Tara Fitzsimmons put Alma on the board first in the 32nd minute when she took a pass off a corner kick from Kelly Walsh and buried the ball in the back of the net.
Saint Mary’s scored the tying goal in the 55th minute when Katie Wehrli scored an unassisted goal when she beat Scots goalie Katie Weicksel one-on-one. The Scot responded in the 62nd and 70th minute when Jessica Swan and Katie Boss each tallied goals.
Lauren Eaton got the Belles final tally with 6:50 left in the contest but Saint Mary’s couldn’t find the equalizing goal.
Alma held a 10-5 edge in shots on goal and posted a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Belles enter the MIAA Tournament, which starts Saturday, as the fifth seed and will take on Hope, Albion or Kalamazoo. Their opponent will be determined once a tie-breaker with those three team is determined.
