Volleyball - Saint Mary’s Advances to MIAA Semifinals
October 30, 2007, ANGOLA, IN – Fifth seeded Saint Mary’s stunned fourth seeded Tri-State 3-0 (30-19, 30-20, 31-29) Tuesday evening in the first round of the MIAA volleyball tournament.
The win lifts the Belles record to 13-17 while Tri-State’s season ends with a 13-15 mark. The Thunder swept the two regular season match-ups between the two schools.
It is the second consecutive year Saint Mary’s advances to the semifinals of the league tournament. The Belles will play top seeded Calvin for the second straight year as well in Grand Rapids, Mich.
In the opening game the Belles jumped out to a 9-2 lead and never looked back in taking a 1-0 lead in the match. The Belles found themselves down 7-2 to start the second game but responded with a 17-7 scoring spree in taking a 19-14 lead and never let the Thunder back into the game in taking a commanding lead in the match.
Tri-State once again opened with a 7-2 edge in the third game but Saint Mary’s responded and eventually got within one point at 20-19. However the Thunder answered back in taking a 28-25 lead. The Belles were able to rally off six of the final seven points in the game to clinch the match.
Andrea Sasgen had a team high 15 kills to go along with her 13 digs to lead the Belles efforts. Lorna Slupcznyski added a double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs. Amanda David dished off 45 assists and produced 10 digs in the winning effort.
Kaela Hellmann (11) and Jacee Watson (11) rounded out the double figure kill producers for Saint Mary’s
Tia Roberts had nine kills to pace the Thunder attack
