Saint Mary’s Picked Fourth in MIAA Preseason Poll

Hope Tabbed as Favorite

November 1, 2007, NOTRE DAME, IN – Coming off the most successful conference season in College history, Saint Mary’s was picked to finish fourth in the MIAA women’s preseason basketball poll which is voted on by the league’s nine coaches. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team in the poll. It is the highest preseason ranking for the Belles since joining the MIAA.

Last season the Belles ended MIAA play with a 10-6 record which bested the previous top mark in school history when Saint Mary’s went 9-7 during the 2005-2006 campaign.

Hope was picked as the early favorite garnering six first-place votes and ten points overall. Last season the squad from Holland, Mich. won the MIAA Tournament championship. Picked to finished second was Calvin with three first-place votes and 15 points overall after ending last year as the MIAA regular season champion and runner-up at the conference tournament.

Albion was chosen third (23) just ahead of the Belles who tallied 26 points.

Rounding out the final five spots was Adrian with 41 points and Alma ranked fifth tallying 45 points. Tri-State (52), Olivet (53) and Kalamazoo (58) completed the poll.

The Belles opens play with a non-conference game at Wheaton (Ill.) on Nov. 16. Saint Mary’s begins MIAA play with a Dec. 5 home contest against Calvin.
