Basketball - Strong Second Half Propels Wheaton Past Saint Mary’s
November 16, 2007, WHEATON, IL – In the season opener for both squads, Wheaton overcame a six-point halftime deficit to post a 75-56 win over Saint in the first round of the Lee Pfund Invitational hosted by Wheaton on Friday afternoon.
An Allison Kessler three-point play with 13:41 left in the first half gave Saint Mary’s a 10-0 lead in the opening frame. The Belles never relinquished their advantage in the first 20 minutes in taking a 30-24 edge at intermission.
The Thunder opened the second half on a 15-8 scoring run in taking a 39-38 lead with 14:29 left in the game. They would never give-up that advantage. Wheaton got their lead up to 62-42 with 6:11 in cruising down the stretch for the victory.
Kessler led all Saint Mary’s scorers with 12 points. Anna Kammrath chipped in 11 while Katie Rashid notched 10 to round out the double figures scorers for the Belles.
Lissie McAlvey came off the bench for Wheaton to score a game high 15 points in 22 minutes of action.
Saint Mary’s plays at 1:00 p.m. (cst) on Saturday against Aurora in the consolation game of the four-team invitational.
