Swimming/Diving - Saint Mary’s Starts MIAA Play with Victory


November 16, 2007, ALBION, MI – In the first MIAA dual meet of the season for the Saint Mary’s swim and diving squad, the Belles posted a 134-100 win over Albion on Friday evening at the Dean Aquatic Center. The Belles won eight of the 13 events competed.

Saint Mary’s raises its dual meet record to 4-1 overall (1-0 MIAA) while Albion falls to 0-3 in both overall and league results.

Melissa Gerbeth posted wins in the 200, 500 and 1000 yard freestyle swims. The native of Mishawaka, Ind., swam the 200 in 2:02.19 while swimming 5:29.44 and 11:32.62 in the 500 and 1000 respectively. She posted 27 total team points for the Belles in those three events.

Lauren Hartman won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 26.48 to nudge out Allison Vail of Albion by 00.30. Casey Nizer swam the 200 yard IM in 2:23.59 in posting a first place finish.

Caroline Arness posted victory in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:05.28. Maggie Williams rounded out the individual victors for Saint Mary’s with a 1:04.01 time in the 100 yard backstroke.

The 200 yard IM relay team of Williams, Hartman, Arness and Kelly Tighe notched victory in their event with a time of 1:58.48.
