Basketball - Strong Offensive Effort Leads Saint Mary’s to Victory
November 17, 2007, WHEATON, IL – Saint Mary’s placed three players in double figures and shot 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the field in cruising to an 83-47 win over Aurora in the consolation game of the Lee Pfund Invitational at Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon.
The win evens the Belles record to 1-1 while Aurora falls to 0-2.
It is the first time in Jenn Henley’s two seasons as head coach at Saint Mary’s that a Belles squad nailed over 50 percent of their field goal attempts. A span that covers 27 games.
In the opening period Saint Mary’s jumped out to a 25-6 lead just 7:42 into the first half and never let the Spartans get closer than 16 points before halftime. The Belles took a 49-20 lead into the locker room.
The second half was much the same as Saint Mary’s held the Spartans to a 27.3 (9-of-33) shooting effort in the second 20-minutes.
Erin Newsom led the offensive onslaught for the Belles scoring 22 points while grabbing 11 rebounds. Allison Kessler chipped in 20 points while Katie Rashid scored a career high 17 points in the winning cause.
The Belles converted 22 Aurora turnovers into 30 points.
