Basketball - Saint Mary’s Cruises Past Notre Dame (MD) at Trinity Thanksgiving Classic
November 24, 2007, TRINITY, TX – In the first game of the Trinity University Thanksgiving Classic, the Saint Mary’s basketball team shot 52.3 percent (34-of-65) from the field in posting a 92-44 win over Notre Dame (Md.) on Saturday afternoon.
The win lifts the Belles record to 2-2 while Notre Dame (MD), who qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season, falls to 2-2.
The Belles took control of the game just past the midway point in the first half. Saint Mary’s, holding a 22-18 lead with 8:23 left in the opening frame, went on a 25-8 scoring spurt in taking a 47-26 advantage into the locker room.
Saint Mary’s put the game out of reach by storming out of the locker room and going a 27-7 scoring run in the first 7:47 of the second half in taking a 74-33 lead. During their opening scoring spurt, the Belles nailed nine of their first 12 field goal attempts and eight of their nine foul shots in putting the game away.
With 2:41 left in the game, Saint Mary’s had their largest lead of the game at 92-42 when Grace Sadowski nailed one of two from the free throw line.
Five different players scored in double figures for the Belles lead by Katie Rashid who tied her career high by scoring 17 points. Alison Kessler chipped in 16 while Anna Kammrath recorded 15 in the victory.
The sister combination of Erin and Becky Newsom each scored 10 points and grabbed a team high nine rebounds. Megan Conaty dished off a career high nine assists in the fifth start of her career.
On Sunday afternoon the Belles play George Fox (WA), another NCAA Tournament team from last season, in the four-team, two-event hosted by Trinity University.
