November 25, 2007, TRINITY, TX – George Fox broke away late in the game to post a 69-58 win over Saint Mary’s on Sunday afternoon in the championship game at the Trinity University Thanksgiving Classic.

George Fox, the 22nd ranked team in the nation, moves to 4-0 while the Belles fall to 2-3.

The pairings for all four games of the tournament were pre-set, but with George Fox defeating Trinity 55-53 and Saint Mary’s hammering Notre Dame (Md.) 92-44 on Saturday, the second day’s match-ups featured the two 1-0 teams in the first game and the two 0-1 teams in the second. Trinity knocked off Notre Dame 98-51 in the consolation game.

The Bruins overcame a 10-for-27 shooting (37 percent) effort in the first half to nail 12 of their 21 attempts (57.1 percent) in the second period.

In a back-and-forth first half the Belles held a 16-14 lead with 9:42 left until halftime. Saint Mary’s upped their advantage via a 12-2 scoring spurt over the next 4:20 in taking a 28-16 lead. However, the Bruins responded with a run over their own to get their deficit down to 30-27 at the intermission.

Coming down the stretch the second half featured four ties and neither team held a lead larger four points. George Fox took the lead for good when Katy Campbell nailed a pair of free throws with 7:16 left giving the Bruins a 45-43 edge. The Bruins proceeded to go on a 17-8 pushing their lead to 62-51 with 1:19 remaining. Saint Mary’s couldn’t get any closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Alison Kessler, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored a team best 19 to pace the Belles offensive performance. Erin Newsom scored 17 points while grabbing a team high nine rebounds. Anna Kammrath rounded out the double figure scorers for Saint Mary’s with 12.

Campbell led all scorers on the afternoon with a 23 point effort.
