Basketball - #1 Hope Knocks Off Saint Mary’s
December 21, 2007, HOLLAND, MI – Hope used a strong second half to break open a tightly contested game in knocking off Saint Mary’s 75-58 Friday evening at the DeVos Fieldhouse.
In addition to being an MIAA contest, the game is part of the four-team, two-day Hope Classic. Saint Mary’s will play North Park on Saturday afternoon in the consolation game.
Hope, the nation’s top ranked team, raises its record to 9-0 overall and 2-0 in league games while the Belles fall to 3-5 and 1-2 respectively.
The Flying Dutch held their largest lead of the first half at 19-7 with 11:12 left until intermission. However, Saint Mary’s responded and got their deficit down to 23-20 with 6:41 remaining until halftime. Hope went into the locker room with a 34-26 edge.
Hope put the game away early in the second half. A Jenny Cowen jumper with 12:08 left in the contest gave the home team a 54-34 lead. Saint Mary’s got no closer than 17 points the rest of the game.
Katie Rashid scored a team best 13 points to lead the Belles efforts. Alison Kessler also scored in double figures, adding 11 in the loss. Anna Kammrath posted a 13-rebound, nine-point effort.
Kaitlyn Kopke tallied a team best 12 points for Hope.
