Basketball - Saint Mary’s Posts Pre-Christmas Victory Against North Park
December 22, 2007, HOLLAND, MI – In the consolation game of the Hope Classic, the Saint Mary’s basketball team placed four players in double figure scoring in posting an 81-66 win over North Park on Saturday afternoon at DeVos Fieldhouse.
The win lifts the Belles record to 4-5 while North Park falls to 1-9.
With the score knotted at 21-21 with 7:01 left until halftime, the Vikings went on a quick 7-0 scoring spurt over the next 1:46 in taking their largest led (28-21) of the game. However, Saint Mary’s scored 18 of the half’s final 23 points in taking a 39-33 advantage after the first 20 minutes.
In the first half, the Belles nailed 53.3 percent (16-of-30) of their field goal attempts in opening up their seven-point lead.
Saint Mary’s continued its strong offensive effort to start the second half by going on a 20-4 scoring run as they took a 59-37 with 12:50 left in the game. North Park couldn’t get their deficit closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
Alison Kessler led a host of Saint Mary’s scorers by tallying 23 points to go along with her team high six assists. For her efforts in the two-day, four-team event, Kessler was named to the All-Tournament team. Erin Newsom contributed her second double-double of the season with a 12-point, 12-rebound performance.
Katie Rashid scored in double figures for the sixth time this year by tallying 11 points in 25 minutes. Becky Newsom came off the bench to notch a career best 11 points to round out the double figure scorers for the Belles. As a team, the Saint Mary’s bench held a 28-10 scoring edge against the Vikings substitutes.
