Basketball - Kessler Named MIAA Player of the Week
December 31, 2007, NOTRE DAME, IN – Alison Kessler was named the MIAA Player of the Week after helping Saint Mary’s to the championship game and a 1-1 record last week at the Smokey Ballenger Classic hosted by Otterbein. It is the fifth time in her career and second time this season she has received the league’s weekly honor.
In the Belles two games, Kessler (LaPorte, Ind./New Prairie HS) averaged 26.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per contests. In addition she connected on 50 percent (19-of-38) of her shots from the field while playing 78 of a possible 80 minutes.
Last week she moved up to second on the Saint Mary’s career scoring list passing Julie Radke’s career total of 1251 points scored from 1986-1990. Kessler has scored 1287 points during her time in a Belles uniform and is 246 points away from catching Jennie Taubenheim as the schools all-time leading scorer with 1533.
In the Belles opening round game against Kenyon, the senior scored a personal high 35 points and grabbed four rebounds. She was 13-of-18 from the field, including 6-of-9 from beyond the arc, in the 77-66 victory. In addition, her 35-point night was the fourth best individual game performance in College history while her 13 made field goals and six three-pointers ranks third and second respectively in a single game in Belles history.
During the championship game against the host Cardinals, Kessler scored a team high 18 points in the 79-65 loss. She also grabbed six rebounds and dished off five assists.
Saint Mary’s is 5-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Belles will travel to MIAA foe Alma on Saturday afternoon in their first game on 2008.
