Basketball - Saint Mary’s Post Victory in First Game of 2008
January 5, 2008, ALMA, MI – Saint Mary’s overcame a rusty start and eventually hung on in posting a 59-56 win over Alma in MIAA basketball action at Cappaert Gym on Saturday afternoon.
The win lifts the Belles record to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in league play while Alma falls to 3-6 and 1-2 respectively. It is the six straight regular season win over the Scots for the Belles.
Alma came out of the contest by nailing seven of their first 12 shots in addition to swiping two steals as they took 14-6 advantage with 12:48 left until intermission. However the Belles controlled the rest of the half. Saint Mary’s converted on nine of their 16 field goal inside the three-point line and went 12-of-14 from the foul line in the first half as they opened up a 33-27 lead at halftime. The Belles didn’t trail the rest of the way.
A Becky Newsom lay-up with 6:29 left in the contest gave Saint Mary’s a seemingly comfortable lead at 51-37. It was their largest lead of the afternoon. However, Alma was able to chip away and eventually cut their deficit down. Ashley Matuzak knocked home a three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining to bring Alma within 57-56.
On the Belles ensuing possession Alison Kessler nailed two foul shots with nine seconds remaining for a 59-56 advantage. The Scot had one final chance but Heather Keenan’s three-pointer at the buzzer missed.
Kessler led all Belles scorers with 19 points. Erin Newsom chipped in 13 points to round out the double figure scorers for the Belles. Anna Kammrath posted her sixth double figure rebounding game of the season by pulling down 10 rebounds in the winning cause.
Alma’s Meagan Hoblet posted 21-point, 18-rebound effort to lead all players.
