Basketball - Cold Shooting Dooms Saint Mary’s in Loss to Albion
January 9, 2008, ALBION, MI – In a match-up of MIAA preseason No. 3 Albion and No. 4 Saint Mary’s, Albion held the Belles to a 27.4 shooting percentage, the second worst mark of the season for Saint Mary’s, in posting an 85-56 win on Wednesday evening at Kresge Gymasium.
The loss drops Saint Mary’s to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in league play while Albion ups its record to 11-2 and 4-1 respectively.
In the opening half the Belles came out flat as the Britons jumped out to a 24-8 with 10:10 left until halftime. Saint Mary’s got within nine points at 26-17 with 7:29 until intermission on an Anna Kammrath field goal. However, Albion quickly got their advantage back to double figures in taking a 36-22 lead into the locker room.
During the opening 20 minutes Saint Mary’s converted on five of their 24 field goal attempts (20.8 percent) while Albion was 15-of-35 (42.9 percent) from the field in opening up their lead at intermission.
Saint Mary’s got their deficit down to 10 points at 41-31 with a Kammrath lay-up less than three minutes into the second half. But once again the Britons responded and eventually got their lead to 54-34 on a pair of Amber Walz free throws with 12:01 left. The Belles couldn’t their deficit to less than 17 points the rest way.
Leading the way for the Belles was Alison Kessler, scoring 20 points in 36 minutes. Erin Newsom also posted a double figure scoring night by chipping in 10.
Brittany Kemperman’s 18-point effort led the way for Albion.
