Swimming/Diving - Hopes Hands Saint Mary’s First MIAA Defeat


January 11, 2008, HOLLAND, MI – In their first dual meet of 2008, the Saint Mary’s swimming/diving team dropped a 153-130 decision to Hope on Friday evening at the Holland Aquatic Center. The Flying Dutch won 10 of the 16 events in claiming the meet.

The loss drops Saint Mary’s to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in dual meets while Hope moves its perfect record to 5-0 and 4-0 respectively.

Saint Mary’s had six different winners with Lindsey Nelis winning the evening’s second event in starting the charge the ultimately came up short. Nelis won the 1650 freestyle with a time of 18:59.01.

However, Hope took top honors in the meets next seven events to squash any chance of a Belles win. Sara Niemann won the 200 yard backstroke in a time of 2:22.05 to end the run of wins by the Flying Dutch.

Casey Niezer claimed victory in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:35.54) while Melissa Gerbeth won the 500 yard freestyle (5:26.20) in the 11th and 12th events of the program.

Leah Bocinsky won the three meter diving competition with a score of 162.70. In the second to last race of the night, Kelly Tighe posted a time of 2:29.43 in the 200 yard IM to round out the top finishers for the Belles.
