Basketball - Kessler Named MIAA Player of the Week
January 21, 2008, NOTRE DAME, IN – Alison Kessler was named the MIAA Player of the Week after helping Saint Mary’s to a pair of league wins over Kalamazoo and Tri-State. It is the sixth time in her career and third time this season she has received the league’s weekly honor.
Kessler (LaPorte, Ind./New Prairie HS) averaged 28.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists and steals per contests. In addition she connected on 16 of her 38 field goal attempts and was 19-for-26 from the free throw line while playing 77 of a possible 80 minutes.
In the Belles 72-69 win at Kalamazoo last Wednesday, the senior played one of the best games of her career. She scored 41 points on 14-of-27 shooting from the field, including a 5-for-10 effort from beyond the arc. Kessler’s tally was the most points scored in a game by a Division III player this season. In addition, her point total surpassed Julie Norman’s single game Saint Mary’s record of 38 points set against Defiance during the 1998-99 season.
She also tied her career high by grabbing nine rebounds in the three-point win over the Hornets. Kessler swiped three steals and dished off three assists as well.
During Saint Mary’s 74-71 win over Tri-State, she scored a team high 16 points on the strength of an 11-for-13 effort from the foul line. Once again she tied her career high by grabbing nine rebounds in helping the Belles move to 10-0 all-time against the Thunder. Kessler’s effort also included three steals and three assists.
Saint Mary’s is 8-7 overall and 4-3 in conference play. The Belles will travel to MIAA foe Calvin on Wednesday evening before hosting Hope, the nation’s top ranked team, on Saturday afternoon.
