Basketball - Calvin Holds Off Saint Mary’s, 66-62
January 23, 2008, GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Calvin withstood a late Saint Mary’s charge in posting a 66-62 win over the Belles Wednesday evening in MIAA basketball action.
Calvin ups its record to 10-6 overall and 6-3 in league play while Saint Mary’s falls to 8-8 and 4-4 respectively.
In the opening half the Knights opened up a 24-14 lead with just under eight minutes left until intermission but a Saint Mary’s charge cut their deficit to 31-30 heading into the locker room.
Calvin held their largest lead of the game at 53-42 with 13:07 remaining after an Amber Bentham three-pointer. The Belles chipped away and eventually got within 54-53 on a Katie Rashid shot from beyond the arc with 5:59 left in the contest.
However, the Knights responded with a run of their own by scoring the game’s next seven points to seemingly put the game out of reach at 61-53 with 4:47 left. Yet a pair of Alison Kessler free throws with 1:11 left ended a Belles scoring spree and cut the Calvin lead to 63-62.
Saint Mary’s had a chance to take the lead with 34 seconds left but Becky Newsom’s lay-up attempt missed and Calvin’s Sarah Partridge nailed two free throws to up the Knights advantage to three points. Kessler’s three-point attempt with eight seconds left missed and Calvin grabbed the rebound and converted one of their two foul shots to seal the win with four seconds left.
Kessler, once again, led all Saint Mary’s scorers with a 20-point effort. Anna Kammrath chipped in 16 points while Rashid (14) and Newsom (10) rounded out the double figures scorers for the Belles.
Marcia Harris led all scorers with 23 points to aid in the Knights win.
