Basketball - Strong Second Half Leads Olivet Past Saint Mary’s
OLIVET, MI – Olivet nailed 62.1 percent (18-of-29) of their field goal attempts in the second half in overcoming a halftime deficit for a 80-70 win over Saint Mary’s Wednesday evening in MIAA basketball action.
The win lifts Olivet’s record to 8-9 overall and 6-3 in league play while the Belles fall to 8-10 and 4-6 respectively.
In the opening half the Belles were led by Megan Conaty’s 14 points as they took a lead as large as eight points - 21-13 with 10:13 left in the first half – before heading into the locker room with a 33-31 advantage.
Saint Mary’s pushed their lead up to 40-33 on an Alison Kessler jumper with 16:59 left in the game. However the Comets responded by scoring 17 of the game’s next 26 points in taking a 55-49 lead with 10:15 remaining. The Belles chipped away and got within 62-61 on an Erin Newsom three-pointer at the 6:05 mark of the second half.
It was as close as Saint Mary’s would get down the stretch as Olivet sealed the game with a 15-2 scoring spurt.
Conaty led a host of Saint Mary’s players with a career best 17 points. Alison Kessler chipped in 15 points while her backcourt mate Katie Rashid tallied 11 points. The final two starters for the Belles (Anna Kammrath – 14, Erin Newsom – 13) rounded out the double figure starters. Kammrath posted a team best 10 rebounds.
Olivet posted a 32-0 edge in bench points during the victory.
