Basketball - Second Half Charge Leads Saint Mary’s Past Adrian
ADRIAN, MI – Saint Mary’s overcame a three-point halftime deficit by holding Adrian to a 26.5 percent (9-for-34) shooting effort in the second half in posting a 61-51 win Saturday afternoon in MIAA basketball action.
The win lifts the Belles record to 9-10 overall and 5-6 in league games while Adrian falls to 7-11 and 4-6 respectively.
During the first half neither team held a lead larger than five points. When Megan Bouwens hit a fast break lay-up with 11:02 left, it gave the home team a 16-14 lead. Saint Mary’s couldn’t grab the lead the rest of the first 20 minutes as they went into the locker room down 31-28.
Erin Newsom gave Saint Mary’s the lead for good at 36-35 when she nailed a jumper with 17:33 remaining. That basket spurred on a 19-6 scoring run that concluded when Katie Rashid converted a lay-up at the 8:09 mark to give the Belles their largest lead at 55-41. Adrian got their deficit down to eight points on two occasions but couldn’t get any closer down the stretch.
Rashid and Alison Kessler led the Saint Mary’s scoring effort by scoring 14 points each. Kessler also added five steals to aid in the winning cause. Newsom chipped in 10 points to round out the double figure scorers.
Kim Olech had a team high 12 points and 10 rebounds for Adrian.
