NOTRE DAME, IN – Saint Mary’s posted a 71-39 win over Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon in MIAA basketball action. The 32-point margin of victory ties the College record for the largest margin of victory during a league game.

The win ups the Belles record to 10-12 overall and 6-8 in MIAA play while
Kalamazoo falls to 4-18 and 1-13 respectively.

In the opening half
Kalamazoo connected on just 18.2 percent (6-of-33) of their field goal attempts as Saint Mary’s held a 42-15 cushion at intermission. In addition, the Belles outscored the Hornets 30-10 in the paint; aiding in their 19-for-34 (55.9 percent) shooting effort during the first period.

The second half was much the same as Saint Mary’s never let their advantage get smaller than 28 points in cruising to the win. For the game, the Belles posted a 38-20 advantage for points in the paint.

Kalamazoo’s 23.3 shooting percentage (14-of-60) was the second worst mark this season for an MIAA squad. Saint Mary’s also forced the Hornets into 27 turnovers in outscoring them 26-16 in points off turnovers. The Belles recorded a team season high 19 steals in the win.

Leading the way for the Belles was Alison Kessler who scored 22 points while adding five steals. Katie Rashid chipped in 13 points while Erin Newsom rounded out the double figures scorers with an 11-point effort.

Anna Kammrath notched a team high 12 rebounds for Saint Mary’s.
