Basketball - Strong Second Half Lifts Belles Past Olivet
NOTRE DAME, IN – Saint Mary’s broke open a 46-46 game by scoring 28 of the game’s final 38 points in posting a 74-56 win over Olivet in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Belles secure the fourth seed for next week’s MIAA Tournament. Saint Mary’s will host Olivet, the tournament’s fifth seed, on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. It is the third straight season the Belles have secured home court for the first round of the league’s post season tournament after not hosting a tournament game during their first eight years as members of the league.
In a game that featured seven lead changes and six ties, the Belles put the game away with that 28-10 run over the game’s final 11:36.
Alison Kessler led the Belles (12-12, 8-8 MIAA) once again with her 12th 20+ point scoring effort of the season. The lone senior on the squad scored 29 points grabbed five rebound and dished out five assists during her final regular season home game. She tied her own Saint Mary’s scoring record for a single season with 497 points during the afternoon.
Erin Newsom registered her sixth double-double with a 16-point, 11-rebound effort. Katie Rashid rounded out the double figure scorers for the Belles with a 14-point performance.
Jamie Kowalczyk scored a team high 14 points to lead the Olivet (9-15, 7-9 MIAA) charge.
