Basketball - Kessler Named MIAA Player of the Week
NOTRE DAME, IN – Alison Kessler was named the MIAA Player of the Week after helping Saint Mary’s to a pair of league wins over Adrian and Olivet. Those wins helped the Belles secure the fourth seed and host first-round site for the conference’s postseason tournament
It is the seventh time in her career and fourth time this season she has received the league’s weekly honor. No other player in the MIAA has received the honor more than twice this season.
Last week she set the Saint Mary’s all-time career scoring record. She passed Jennie Taubenheim’s mark of 1533 career points in the win over Adrian. The senior now has 1581 career points.
In the Belles two games, Kessler (LaPorte, Ind./New Prairie HS) averaged 30 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists per contest. In addition she went to the free throw line 37 times, connecting on 30 of those attempts.
During Saint Mary’s 74-63 win over Adrian she scored 31 points en route to setting the College’s all-time scoring mark. Kessler went to the free throw line 27 times, connecting on a league and College record 22 free throws during the contest.
In the final regular season game of the season Kessler notched her 12th 20-plus point scoring effort of the year by tallying 29 in the 74-56 victory. During that game she tied her own College record for points in a season. She has recorded 497 points this year tying the mark she set last season.
Saint Mary’s is 12-12 overall and 8-8 in conference play. The Belles host Olivet on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the first-round of the league’s postseason tournament. It is the third consecutive year that Saint Mary’s will host the first-round of the postseason tournament after not hosting a tournament game during their first eight years as members of the MIAA.
