Basketball - Second Half Burst Leads Saint Mary's to MIAA Semifinals
NOTRE DAME, IN – With Saint Mary’s clinging to a 27-25 lead less than two minutes into the second half, the Belles went on a 18-2 scoring spurt in helping them put away Olivet 71-62 Tuesday evening in the first round of the MIAA Tournament.
The win is the Belles fourth straight as they up their record to 13-12 while Olivet finishes their season with a 9-16 mark.
Fourth seeded Saint Mary’s advances to play Hope, the nation’s top ranked squad, on Thursday evening at 7:30 in Holland, MI in the semifinal round. It is the second straight year the two teams have meet in the MIAA semifinals.
During the game Alison Kessler scored 23 points to bring in season total to 520 points which sets the new Saint Mary’s single season scoring record. She broke the mark of 497 points that she set last season.
Saint Mary’s took momentum into halftime by scoring the first half’s five final points in taking a 25-20 lead at intermission. The five point halftime lead was the largest advantage either team had in the first 20 minutes.
The Belles took control of the game with their scoring run early in the second half and never let Olivet get closer than seven points the rest of the way in sealing the win.
Saint Mary’s took advantage of 22 Comet turnovers as they outscored the visitors 24-6 in points off turnovers.
Anna Kammrath and Katie Rashid each chipped in 10 points for Saint Mary’s while Erin Newsom added eight points and 10 rebounds to aid in the winning effort.
Amy Brackenwagen had a team best 15 points for Olivet.
