#1 Hope Ends Saint Mary's Season in MIAA Semifinals
HOLLAND, MI – Courtney Knox scored a career high 18 points in leading Hope to a 82-65 win over Saint Mary’s in the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament on Thursday evening at DeVos Fieldhouse. It is the second straight year Hope ends Saint Mary’s season in the semifinals of the conference’s tournament.
Hope, the nations No. 1 ranked team, improves to 26-0 while the Belles season ends with a 13-13 mark. Hope will host second seeded Albion on Saturday afternoon for the league championship.
The Flying Dutch posted a 61-37 rebounding advantage and posted and 20-7 edge in second chance points. Those 61 rebounds ties a 12 year old MIAA Tournament record for most team rebounds in a game.
After Hope scored the first six points of the ballgame, Alison Kessler got hot and scored 14 points in helping Saint Mary’s go on a 20-9 scoring spurt in taking a five point lead at 20-15 with 11:07 left in the first half. However the Flying Dutch responded by ending the half on a 26-9 run in taking a 41-29 lead at intermission.
The Flying Dutch increased their lead to as large as 29 points at the 8:29 mark and never let the Belles get closer than 12 points in the second frame.
Kessler, Saint Mary’s all-time leading scorer, recorded 24 points in her final collegiate contest. She connected on nine of 22 field goal attempts, including a 5-for-9 effort from beyond the arc in 35 minutes.
Anna Kammrath rounded out the double figure scorers for the Belles with 10.
