Alison Kessler Named Regional Player of the Year

NOTRE DAME, IN – Alison Kessler was named the Great Lakes Region Player of the Year. The all-region team, which is in seventh year of existence, is voted on by the region’s Sports Information Directors. Kessler is now up for All-American honors which will be announced this weekend at the DIII Final Four.

Last season she became the first Saint Mary’s player to be named to the All-Region team when she earned Second-Team honors. The region is made of schools in the Heartland Athletic, Ohio Athletic, Northcoast Collegiate, Alleghany Mountain Athletic, President Athletic and Michigan Intercollegiate conferences. In all it encompasses, 57 different schools.

Kessler (LaPorte, IN/New Prairie HS) led the MIAA in scoring and steals all season averaging 20.9 points a game while swiping 2.77 steals a contest. Her points per game total ranks eighth in the nation. She also ranked seventh in assists in the league dishing out 3.00 a game. Her 5.4 rebounds a game was 16th among conference leaders.

The senior was named MIAA MVP. She also earned First-Team MIAA honors for the third consecutive year. She help guide the Belles to a 13-win season, its most since joining the NCAA ranks 11 years ago. Saint Mary’s advanced to the semifinals of the league’s post-season tournament for the second straight year. Kessler was one of three players from the MIAA to earn the regional honor (Marcia Harris – Calvin, Jordyn Boles – Hope).

During the season she became the Saint Mary’s leader in career scoring. She graduates with 1628 career points. The senior also set the College record for points in a season with 544 points, which eclipses her own record of 497 point she set last year. She posted 14 games of at least 20 points which also was the best among league players.

Her 41-point performance against
Kalamazoo on Jan. 16 was the most points scored in the league this year and at the time was the most points in a game by a Division III player. The team’s co-captain set an MIAA record with 22 made free throws in Belles home win over
Adrian on Feb. 20.
