Saint Mary’s Starts MIAA Play with Sweep

NOTRE DAME, IN – During the first weekend of league play, the Saint Mary’s softball team got off to a good start by sweeping Calvin on Saturday afternoon. Saint Mary’s won the first game 6-5 and then took the nightcap by a 5-0 count.

Saint Mary’s ups its record to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in MIAA play while Calvin falls to 4-10 and 0-2 respectively.

In the first game the Belles jumped out to a 5-2 lead after the third inning. However, Calvin fought back and eventually tied the scored in the top of the seventh. In the bottom half of the inning Saint Mary’s put the game away when Ashley Peterson led off with a triple and Katie Rashid singled her home two batters later.

A foursome of players led a 10-hit attack for Saint Mary’s. Rashid, Peterson, Maureen Healy and Hayley Bojorquez each posted two-hit games. McKenna Corrigan went 1-for-3 with a three-run homerun.

Calli Davison went all seven innings on the mount to pick up the win.

In the second game, the Belles pounded out 13 hits and Corrigan struck out five in seven innings of work.

Peterson was 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI’s with two doubles. Ashley Fusaro went 3-for-3 with an RBI to aid in the winning cause.
