Saint Mary’s, Alma Split Doubleheader

NOTRE DAME, IN – Saint Mary’s and Alma split a pair of games on Saturday afternoon in MIAA softball action. Alma won the first game by a 9-1 count in five innings while Saint Mary’s overcame a seven-run deficit in the second game to post an 11-8 win.

Saint Mary’s record moves to 15-5 overall and 4-2 in league contests while Alma goes to 15-6 and 5-1 respectively.

During the first game Katie Koechling held the Belles to two hits and struck out four to improve to 7-1 on the mound. Alma’s offense posted just five hits but took advantage of eight walks. Kasey Miller went 2-for-2 to aid in the winning effort.

The Belles fell behind 7-0 after two innings in the second game but responded with a seven run third inning to knot the score. After Alma took an 8-7 edge in the bottom half of the third, the Belles scored the winning runs off an Ashley Fusaro three-run homerun to centerfield in the sixth inning.

Fusaro’s bat help carry Saint Mary’s in the nightcap as she went 3-for-5 with five RBI’s and two runs scored. Cathy Kurczak also posted a multi-hit game with a 3-for-4 performance with three runs scored out of the nine spot in the line-up.

McKenna Corrigan overcame a rough start in posting a complete game performance to improve to 8-0 on the year. The senior struck out three and allowed just four hits after the third inning.
