Saint Mary’s, Hope Split Doubleheader

HOLLAND, MI – In an MIAA softball doubleheader, Saint Mary’s and Hope each took a game. Hope won the opener 6-0 but Saint Mary’s came back to win the nightcap 7-5 at Wolters Stadium on the campus of Hope College.

Saint Mary’s record now stands at 18-7 overall and 7-3 in league games while Hope moves to 20-9 and 6-4 respectively.

In the opening game the Belles were shutout for the first time this season. Hope starting pitcher Leah VanEnk held Saint Mary’s without a hit until the fifth inning. VanEnk gave-up just two hits in the victory. Laura Tanouye went 3-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the Flying Dutch offense.

A Katie Rashid single and an Ashley Peterson double were the only two hits the Belles offense produced in the opener.

During the second game the Belles bats came alive as they pounded out 10 hits in the victory. Saint Mary’s broke open a 5-5 game with two runs in the sixth inning as Maureen Healy and Cathy Kurczak each scored runs.

McKenna Corrigan went 2-for-3 with four RBI’s and a run scored to aid in the winning effort. The senior also got the win on the mound as she struck out three and scattered nine hits to move to remain perfect in her 10 decisions.

Peterson also produced a multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 performance.
