Basketball All-MIAA 09
Three Belles Earn MIAA Honors
ROYAL OAK, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced its All-MIAA women’s basketball team for the 2008-09 season. Included among the list of 14 honorees were three Saint Mary's College basketball players.
Erin Newsom, Nicole Beier, and Liz Wade were all recognized for their efforts during the past season, which was also the most successful basketball season in program history. Newsom was an All-MIAA first selection for the first time in her career. Beier, meanwhile, received the nod for All-MIAA Second Team honors, which is also a first for her career. Wade was named the league's Defensive Player of the Year.
The Belles finished the 2008-09 campaign second in the MIAA with 13 wins, which was the highest finish for a Saint Mary's basketball team along with the most conference wins in a season.
Erin Newsom - The senior was third in the MIAA in scoring average in conference games (14.4 ppg) and in rebounding in league contests (7.8 rpg). She was also third in the conference in field goal percentage (49.7%). Newsom finished the season second in free throw percentage in MIAA contests, making 50 of 60 free throws for a 83.3% average. She was named the MIAA Player of the Week after scoring 36 points and grabbing 19 rebounds in the Belles' first two MIAA wins of the season. Newsom was named to the All-MIAA Second Team as a sophomore.
Nicole Beier - The senior forward scored 110 points in just 11 MIAA contests this season. She was second on the team with 11 made three-point baskets in league contests for a 42.3% average behind the arc (11-of-23). She was also the only player during the entire regular season to score more than 20 points against MIAA Champion Hope (25 points in Jan. 3 victory - Hope's only loss of the season). Beier was also named the MIAA Player of the Week after scoring 32 points in 37 minutes off the bench in the Belles' own Thanksgiving Classic in November.
Liz Wade - The sophomore led the MIAA in steals (3.56 per game) and was third in assists in helping the Belles to their most successful season since joining the conference over a decade ago. She is just the second player for Saint Mary's to earn the honor (Katie Boyce in 2004 was the other).
